Special Notice: Live Webinars

Effective July 1, 2022, the required 150 hours of play therapy instruction for RPTTM applicants may be earned via contact training, non-contact training, and live webinars.

  • Contact Training – a minimum of 75 hours are required to be Contact Training. There is no maximum, all 150 hours may be obtained in this category.

The remaining 75 hours may be obtained via:

  • APT Live Webinars (specialized) – a maximum of 75 hours may be from APT Live Webinars that meet specialized conditions.

  • Non-Contact Training – a maximum of 40 hours may be from Non-Contact Trainings (book studies, on-demand webinars, live webinars that do not meet the specialized conditions, etc.).

Approved Providers offering specialized live webinars will provide statements on certificates of attendance in reference to: “This workshop meets APT’s definition of Live Webinar,” “APT Live Webinar,” OR “APT Specialized Live Webinar.”

Moratorium and Changes to the Registered Play TherapistTM (RPT) & Registered Play Therapist - SupervisorTM (RPT-S) Standards and Applications

APT announced a credentialing moratorium on April 1, 2019 that went into effect on July 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019.    A new set of Standards and a new Application were made available May 31, 2019.  Additional information on this announcement can be viewed on our website.

Changes to the Supervised Play Therapy Experience & Supervision Credentialing Requirement

Effective January 1, 2020, hours earned toward the supervised play therapy experience and supervision requirements for the RPT and RPT-S applications must be under the supervision of an RPT-S only.  Any supervised play therapy experience and supervision hours accrued prior to January 1, 2020 will be accepted provided they fall under the existing guidelines at time of attainment.  Please refer to the Guide for further instruction.  If you were conferred the RPT or RPT-S credential prior to January 1, 2020, this change will NOT affect you.  APT dedicated a special section of its magazine to the 2020 changes.

Changes to the Definition of Contact & Non-Contact Hours for Continuing Education

Effective January 1, 2020, contact hours are defined as "in-person" instruction only.  Live webinars, recorded webinars, book studies, etc. are defined as non-contact hours and are limited to 50 hours towards the APT credentialing application.  APT dedicated a special section of its magazine to the 2020 changes.

COVID-19 Temporary Exception

Effective May 15, 2020, through June 30, 2022,  APT Approved Providers temporarily offered "contact" hours for online continuing education if the training met the specific conditions of the COVID-19 Exception. Beginning July 1, 2022, contact credit is awarded only for in-person training.
