| Frequently Asked Questions - Credential Renewals |
Frequently Asked Questions Welcome! Below you will find the most common questions the Registered Play TherapistTM, Registered Play Therapist-SupervisorTM, and School-Based Registered Play TherapistTM program and requirements. For general credential renewal information, visit the credential renewal homepage. Should you have additional questions or require further assistance, please contact APT. 1. What is the difference between membership dues and credentialing fees? Membership dues cover annual member benefits with APT and are billed on your anniversary date. Credentialing fees are also billed annually, however, they are specific to renewing your Registered Play Therapist™, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™, or School Based-Registered Play Therapist™ credential. Submitting payment for membership does not cover the cost for credentialing and vice versa. For clarification about Membership vs. Credentialing, please review our info-graphic. 2. How can I access my credential information from my member profile? Once logged into your member profile, select My Profile in the menu bar, then About, scroll down until you reach Additional Information.
3. Do I need to provide APT with my state mental health license? An active state license is required to maintain your play therapy credential. Although APT will make every attempt to provide reminders via email when licensure updates are needed, it is each individual’s responsibility to ensure that their licensing information is correct and current at all times. Failure to do so will result in your credential being placed on ‘Inactive’ status
4. How long does it take to process my renewal?
Renewals may take up to 3-4 weeks for review and processing. Confirmation of renewal letters will be sent to the primary email address listed on your member profile.
5. I have CE due this year. What trainings can I submit?
There are a few qualifying CE activities that may be counted towards your CE requirement:
For detailed information on renewal and CE requirements, please refer to the standards/guide for your credential:
6. How many CE hours do I need?
Beginning January 1, 2023, all active registrants will be required to submit 24 hours of play therapy specific instruction (12 hours must be in-person trainings) with their next CE renewal. Two (2) of the 24 must be in cultural & social diversity specific to play therapy.
7. What is the time frame in which I can submit hours?
We can accept continuing education hours taken within your CE cycle (36-month period). Your CE cycle begins the day after your CE due date and ends on your next CE due date. Trainings taken outside of your CE cycle will not be accepted.
E.g., your continuing education hours are due 3/31/2022. Your CE cycle would be 4/1/2019 – 3/31/2022. 8. Can I submit all non-contact hours? Contact hours are required for renewal. Contact hours are obtained through in-person trainings. All online trainings are considered non-contact. The COVID-19 exception became effective March 15, 2020 and lasted through June 30, 2022. During this time, APT Approved Providers temporarily offered contact hours for online continuing education if the training met specific conditions. This information would and must be indicated on certificates. 9. Where can I find contact training? You can visit our training directory to search for contact and non-contact APT approved trainings. Our training directory is always being updated, so be sure to check back often. 10. How do I know if my CE is APT Approved? Look for the words "APT Approved Provider" followed by a five-digit number (XX-XXX) on marketing materials and/or certificates of attendance. Only current APT Approved Providers may offer APT Continuing Education, which are required to obtain and renew an APT credential. For a list of current providers, visit APT's Directory of Approved Providers. Please note, APT only accepts trainings offered by APT Approved Providers. If your training was not offered for APT CE, we would be unable to accept it. 11. How to designate a training as culturally and socially diverse: Cultural & Social Diversity is defined in the Glossary of Terms as the ability of play therapists to:
The
definition is intentionally broad to respect the individual needs of
each credential holder. Professionals should use their best clinical
judgment when identifying play therapy education that will fulfill the
cultural & social diversity requirement for them personally. 12. I am an RPT-STM. What is the supervisor training hour requirement? In addition to the required play therapy specific hours, RPT-STMs must also document 3 or 6 hours of clinical supervisor training. These hours may be general or play therapy specific and may be either contact or non-contact.
